Cairney is a very good player, potentially on the radar of Premier League sides, though.

I think an important part of this summer will be who moves on. I still think we have some dead wood at the club.

I agree with you about having to move a fair bit of dead wood, and unearned salaries. I've just noticed that Sunderland have sixteen registered midfielders! At least someone else is also suffering from a dodgy buying history!

Sunderland look very similar to us, albeit a season behind. Circled the drain for several seasons, disinterested owner and massive amounts splurged on players and managerial payoffs.

In other news, Tommy Elphick is being linked with a move over to Small Heath. I would not be disappointed to see that occur.

Elphick has loads of heart and absolutely no pace. It's no good just being willing if you can't get to the ball often enough.

His positioning is poor too, and he turns like the QE2.

Good guy, but a poor footballer.

Marc Roberts from Barnsley has been linked with us recently. He's a tall CB who would do a similar job to Baker. He's right footed, so how would that affect the balance with Chester being the obvious first choice CB?

If Jansson's move to Leeds is in doubt (and with the mentioned dispute between them and his club plus the added complexity of their manager quitting it might well be) then we should be keeping near to the front of the queue.

Here I am dreaming of Jansson and we get linked to this guy: http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/aston-villa-target-grant-hanley-13099998

He makes Elphick look like Baresi.

You can see why Bruce might be tempted .... "He's not overly confident on the ball" .... should fit in well with SB's give it a whack tactic. 2017/2018 Transfer Speculation - Page 2 3640643743

Glenn Whelan was an underrated player once, have a feeling he might be a bit past it now, though: http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/transfers-aston-villa-confident-landing-13135004

I've got a lot of respect for Whelan. He's a player who's made a career out of limited assets, by application and attitude. However, as you say his age is against him.

It doesn't fit with this supposed agenda of adding four or five quality players to the squad. Whelan would be a squad player at best.

Buying old players on free transfers and paying big wages for a cover squad player is a mistake we've made too often.

I think our success next season depends on getting the best out of existing Villa players, with just a couple of astute signings added.

It's how we use the players we've already got that will make or break us next season.

John Terry being linked by the Sun. I sincerely hope not. Loathe the prick.
