Cardiff V Aston Villa: 2nd January 15:00

So the first game of 2017 looms and it's against Cardiff.

They're 4th bottom and so this looks the kind of game we need to win, especially with our away difficulties. I'm expecting a decent, hard fought win.

It won't be pretty but I think we'll edge it by the odd goal. Cardiff will be fresh from their extended break as their match was postponed the other night. That will help them, but we surely have too much for them.

Villa to win, agree with you VB it will be tight but Villa's greater Firepower should hopefully prove enough in this match. Kodja always looks a threat and McCormack starting to look like the player we brought for 12 million.

Sometimes that's a blessing in disguise in terms of match fitness. We have enjoyed a longer rest that most having played on Thursday whilst others played on Friday and Saturday before these Monday fixtures.

It's tough having to go to Cardiff knowing that anything less than a win would be damaging. None of the present crop of Championship teams are going to roll over for us. We have to win Cardiff V Aston Villa: 2nd January 15:00 205019816

I've been so out of touch with The Championship, even with Villa in it, that I didn't realise Cardiff were fourth from bottom until just.

Too many years of being at the wrong end of the premiership has divorced us from the reality of being competitive. In this league with the money we've spent we should be serious about promotion. When you're serious about promotion (even via the play offs) you have to win most of your games. Outside of games against the top three or four the games are must win. It's even more imperative in our case because of the hole the RDM era dug for us.

That's a good point Sandie. "Competitive' is a word that was forced out of our lexicon years ago. We have to relearn this aspect of our game.

We will have to watch out that we don't get over powered by a very ordinary Cardiff team today.

A lot resting on the shoulders of McCormack today however he seems to be a player who thrives on responsibility and being the main man. wouldn't be surprised if McCormack grabbed a couple today, needs a good performance from Grealish in order for that to happen.

As you say Jim, Ross likes to play as a loan striker. It will be interesting to see how he plays today.
