I'm going to say something contentious. Reilly is quite good at identifying players. The French guys we signed are all good players, it's the way we handled them that was crap.

Paddy should never have been promoted to 'Director of recruitment' as he is purely and simply a stats guy, but I'm betting that Richards, Lescott and possibly Gestede were not his 'mistakes', and he can't be blamed for the team selections.

The image of him walking up to David Moyes on a training pitch in Spain to 'interview him for the Villa job still makes me squirm, but regardless of that when he's behind a computer screen he knows his stuff.

Having said all this, it's irrelevant. He will undoubtedly be sacked to make it a totally clean sweep of the old regime.

He possibly needs to be moved on to a more junior role in the scouting set up. I think the problem with our recruitment was less the players in question but in how little thought was put into how they would function as a unit. Between Sherwood and Riley players were being purchased to suit different ends and there were a few ingredients missing. There was no leader in the team once Vlaar went with us being left with players who were jokers or players who were weak and no doubt quiet in the dressing room. Added to that, there was no effective midfield enforcer. Sanchez never brought his international form to our first team and Gueye, whilst his stats dazzled last season (proof if ever there was it that they are to be taken with a pinch of salt), never totally convinced me as he sometimes seemed reluctant to put the effort in. If we had someone who knew what they were doing guiding recruitment last season wouldn't have been as big a disaster. Riley has to accept a portion of the blame for that and pay with the loss of his highly paid job.

I think Reilly was briefed by Almstadt/Fox last summer, and Sherwood decided to do his own thing. We bought players for two different teams, and when the transfer window closed Sherwood made sure that none of Reilly's buys were included. They've been treated shamefully since then imo.

I think the only player the two 'buyers' agreed on was Gueye.

Ego's triumphed over common sense, and we relegated ourselves through gross stupidity.

It boggles the mind how many charlatans Lerner welcomed to the club on his watch. Sherwood... Fox...

It proves that Dr. X needs to be careful who he appoints to key positions. You can have all the money and good intentions in the world but it matters not a jot if you employ fools and blaggers to achieve it.

Lerner always thought that AVFC was about business. He never grasped the fact that people needed to know a lot about football.

It just needs "Hook's" name to be added as a director and we will have filled the shirts in the dressing room pic. Who is Hook?

Interesting that all of these people were appointed back at the end of May but the appointments are appearing at company house gradually.

Look here: https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/10176070/officers

Samuelson's profession is down as 'Commercial Director' there so maybe he's replacing Wijeratna? Banfill is described as a 'Private Equity Advisor' which is what he does for a living rather than his role at Villa, I guess?

Our first press conference under Tony Xia is going to be interesting. It should answer a few questions for us about the senior management structure. One thing appears certain. With the names mentioned we will lose the naive, friendly, respectful, proper, and all those other adjectives that describe Randy Lerner's ownership of Villa. This bunch are going to be far more hard nosed in the way they do AVFC business.

Samuelson, Xia, Wyness and Banfill apparently. So it was Banfill in that dressing room pic with Xia. So where's Hook?

Wyness is a good experienced CEO and football operator. Good to have someone like that involved rather than over-promoted Faulkner or the suit full of bullshit that was Fox.
