Time for a match thread, I think.

This was always going to be a big game being a rare chance to face that rabble from Bordesley who have showed little prospect of a Premier League return but as our results have continued to be poor it's become massive. Some may argue that it's a distraction from league games with the prize only being local bragging rights and passage into the 4th round of what seems to be England's most unloved competition rather than three precious points. However, winning this game will give us a massive lift in confidence following three poor results and ahead of what looks like a tougher run. I said the exact same thing before the Baggies game and after what happened there this one is now even more important. Frankly as far as I'm concerned losing is just not an option.

The opposition are currently sitting 7th in the Championship, just below the play-offs. Villa fan Rowett is doing a great job there considering all their problems. They'll also be well up for this, it's a cup final to them and the opportunity to kick us whilst we are down is something no player or supporter of them will want to miss.

Good job we'll beat them, then. (He says more through hope rather than guaranteed expectation). 2-1 to us after extra time. Aston Villa V THEM... Tues Sep 22nd 7:45 Kick Off 1554986367

What are your predictions and expectations for Tuesday's game?

I'll put my cards on the table .... I do not hate Blues. I have a number of good friends who are noses and they love their team just as much as we love the Villa. Good on you guys. I hope the match has a real edge but goes off without trouble.

Now to the match. Forget containing the opposition, let's go out in full on attack mode and rock the Blues to their foundations. They've got a very good manager in Gary Rowett and they play surprisingly good football, so let's go out and show them how talented our team is when it plays with out restraint.

There aren't any points on offer tomorrow, but a convincing Villa win could be worth points in the next few games because of the confidence gained by playing up to our potential.

.... And then there's the bragging rights! UP THE VILLA !!!!!! Aston Villa V THEM... Tues Sep 22nd 7:45 Kick Off 205019816 Aston Villa V THEM... Injury News

Idrissa Gueye is out of Aston Villa's Capital One Cup derby clash with Birmingham after travelling to France to try to solve his hamstring problems.

The midfielder has seen a specialist after missing Villa's last two games - defeats to Leicester and West Brom - following a setback in his recovery from the injury he initially suffered on international duty with Senegal this month.

Adama Traore (ankle) and Jores Okore (knee) are also out of the third round encounter but striker Rudy Gestede is pushing to start after a substitute appearance against West Brom, while Ciaran Clark could also come into contention if Sherwood opts to play three central defenders.

Disappointing that both Adama and Gana are out still. Both of them have supposedly been getting late fitness tests ahead of games but weeks are now passing with their problem staying which is a concern.

Gestede is an interesting idea, so far he's struggled to adapt to playing against Premiership centre halves but he won't have to play against those tomorrow night.

I know it was a season and a half ago but: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27016264

If it gets to them in a positive way we might see some good football.

I hope it's more of a back 3 than a 5. The way our FB's play we are often caught with too few at the back (hence Tim playing so many DM's I think) if this stops him picking so many DM's great. Can't help but think it may stifle us offensively. That said we do need to shore up the defence. We need something to change, so go for it.

I'm nervous and don't think it will be easy at all. Can see ET. Imagine pens against this lot, yikes!!!!!

Come on you lions. Play with pride and passion please.

It makes sense, perhaps more sense than it did when Sherwood first raised it as our most talented wide player Adama is seemingly struggling with injury and the guys we currently use in wide positions both probably prefer to play a bit more centrally (Gil particularly so). Against Leicester particularly, I felt that both Bacuna and Amavi struggled with their defensive duties towards the end of the game. Both of them started to give away stupid free kicks. This would suit them in giving them more freedom.

The way that team sheet is laid out it's suggesting Clark is in as a defensive midfielder, I'd say that in practice it should be he's there as a third centre half? Or is Tim's defensive midfielder obsession pluming new depths?

Richards right back and Clark and Lescott at CB

It's a 4-3-3 system and no Sanchez, that will do me for starters.

COME ON VILLA!!
